The City of Manila is the capital of the Philippines and one of the cities that comprise Metro Manila. The city is located in Luzon, the country's largest island. Manila is the heart of a booming metropolitan area populated by over 10 million people. It is the second most populous city in the Philippines, second to Quezon City. History indicates that Manila derived its name from the word "may nilad" (there is nilad), with reference to flowering mangrove plant that flourished by the bay. In the 16th century, the then Maynilad escalated from a Muslim settlement into the seat of the Spanish colonial government during three centuries of Spanish rule from 1565 to 1898. The United States thereafter run the city until 1946. In 1975, Metropolitan Manila region was recognized as an independent entity. Today, Manila is the focal point of major tourism offices, attractions and accommodations facilities. There is a variety of natural and man-made tourist destinations that caters to local and foreign visitors. There are also luxury hotels and restaurants, parks and museums, historical attractions, recreational facilites, and more. Philippine time utilizes Standard time zone: Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 8 hours.
