Huachuca-Arizona

Huachuca-Arizona came from the old Pima Indian Village in 1697, and incorporated as a city on Dec. 8, 1958.


It is situated on the State Route #90, 60 miles SE of Tucson and 26 miles south of Benson.

Huachuca, Arizona is bordered to the south, east and west by the historic Fort Huachuca / Sierra Vista, Arizona and to the north by the Babocomari Land Grant and Babocomari River.

The city operates facilities such as the landfill, water and sewer system, trash collection, police and fire departments, senior center, library, city hall, swimming pool, community center and parks system.

Huachuca started out as a rail stop. The rail is no longer operational, and formerly stretched between Tombstone and Patagonia.

When Fort Huachuca opened in 1954, the city progressed even after several name changes - Campstone Station, Sunset City, and Huachuca Vista. It was finally settled on the name Huachuca City and incorporated in 1958.

Huachuca City is a small town situated at the north exit of Fort Huachuca, A US Army Intelligence Center and School and a major prominent military installation in Arizona and the Southwest. The Fort is key to Huachuca’s economy, providing the major employment for the town.

The city also attracts retirees and tourism starting to become a major business, mainly because the close proximity to Tombstone and Kartchner Caverns State Park.

Huachuca-Arizona is the Sunset City for its beautiful sunsets in Cochise County.

The community derived its name from the Indian word for ‘thunder’.

Huachuca is near the Mexico border. Nearby parks and recreation are the Coronado National Forest, Huachuca Recreation Area, the Patagonia Lake, and the Cochise Stronghold.

Its small community has a population of about 2,000 only. It is mainly inhabited by White Americans comprising more than 70% of the population, the rest being Hispanic, African American, Native American, Asian and other races.

Huachuca is known for its large population of single adults. Approximately 25% of its population is non-white. Several racial groups are well represented in the town, thus boasting a much diverse group of residents.

Around 63% of the housing units in Huachuca City are owner-occupied, where many residents rent affordable one-bedroom or studio type apartments. The people give more support to the Republican party.
