Heber-Overgaard-Arizona is in Navajo County, 138 miles from Phoenix in NE Arizona, situated in the picturesque Sitgreaves National Forest.
When the Mormon migrated in 1876, the Little Colorado River settlements were established.
Heber, Arizona was founded in 1883, named after Heber J. Grant who was a prominent member of the Mormon church.
Overgaard, Arizona which is adjacent, was originally called “Oklahoma Flat” but later named after its first sawmill owner.
Their local economy is attributed to retirement, tourism, timber production, and small retail. Timber is harvested for one sawmill and one paper mill companies.
Being close to the Sitgreaves National Forest provides recreation opportunities.
The unincorporated Heber and Overgaard 6,620 feet-high communities are surrounded by natural wonders. South is the steep Mongollon Rim that ranges from 1,000-2,000 feet that divides plateau regions from each other. The Rim divides the plateaus of the northern from the lower central and southern areas, and offers scenic points of interest.
Man-made lakes are within the area, ideal for boating, water sports and fishing. Choose also from hunting elk, deer, antelope and bear, extensive camping and picnicking. Wild horses, turkeys and birds are a sight to see.
Enjoy the sights of the Chevelon Canyon Dam, Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery, Chevelon Butte, and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The 200-acre Mogollon Lake is just 3 miles of Overgaard which is in the planning stages.
Numerous restaurants, lodging, a brand new library, churches, medical offices, markets, hardware stores, sporting good stores offer a large variety of leisure.
Their annual July 4 celebration and fireworks provide entertainment that boasts to rival even the largest metropolitan displays. Add Oktoberfest and Winterfest held in the Tall Timbers County Park, with facilites for handball, racquetball, baseball and playground for kids.
From summer hiking and fishing to winter cross-country skiing, Heber-Overgaard is your place to live at your pace to appreciate life not offered in the big city.
To reach Heber-Overgaard-Arizona, take the state Highway 87 to Payson (north from Phoenix or south from Interstate-40), then continue east via state Highway 260.
It’s a popular small-town feel summer getaway.
