Hayden-Arizona

South of Gila County is Hayden-Arizona, on state Highway 177, about 94 miles from Phoenix.

Formerly into copper production, Hayden now focuses its attention to tourism and retirement facilities.

The town’s economic base is the Hayden Smelter. Agriculture is still important with ranches and farms along the San Pedro River, that converge with the Gila River in Hayden.

Thus, this provided fishing, picnicking and camping recreations for its tourists. These activities are enhanced by the mountain and canyon scenery around Hayden.

The standing copper mainstays in the area also add to the attraction. Dripping Spring and Tortilla Mountains also provide camping and picnicking. The San Carlos Lake has facilities for boating and fishing. You can also do hunting.

One thing you’ll notice in Hayden, Arizona is the large number of young children, especially babies and pre-school kids.

Households are usually larger than most towns, consistent with its family-oriented emphasis.

Residents benefit from lower real estate taxes than most other towns in Arizona.

Many recreational opportunities in Hayden-Arizona are the Dripping Spring Mountains and the Tortilla Mountains that have many camping and picnic facilities. Coolidge Dam with San Carlos Lake is a popular place for boating and fishing.

The Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum has thousands of examples of desert plant and tree life. The ghost town of Chilito is just about eight miles northeast.
