68 miles from Phoenix, Gila Bend-Arizona lies near a sharp ‘bend’ in the Gila River, and so its name.

Gila Bend's fertile banks made agriculture the main source of economy, the list of crops of which are cotton, alfalfa and grain.

The town is also known as the “Crossroads of the Southwest” because the area has been part of an important transportation route in the settling, development and growth of the Great Southwest.

Gila Bend as the "center of a wheel," had spokes leading in many directions throughout the region.

Gila Bend’s Hohokam history remnants are still in place in its town museum. It is situated near an ancient Hohokam village. One-acre of petroglyphs on the Painted Rocks is a sight to see.

Camping and picnicking are provided. Also in Gila Bend is the Painted Rocks Dam, Arizona’s largest flood control reservoir. The Gila Trail, an 18th century thoroughfare, was journeyed by military VIPs like Kit Carson, Army of the West Gen. Stephen Kearny, and Mormon Battalion Capt. St. George Cooke.

Its racial makeup is approximately divided between the White and Hispanic or Latino origin, plus a small percentage of other races.

Gila Bend boasts several roadside sculptures and the 1963 Space Age Lodge motel and restaurant , named for its "Space Age" themed architecture and décor.
