Filipino American Celebrations

Filipino American celebrations in various parts of the US are mainly held in California, Washington, New York City, Hawaii and Guam, where most Filipinos are concentrated.

The Filipino American (FilAm) community is the second largest Asian American group in the United States, followed by the Chinese American community.

We account for 22% of the Asian American population. In 2006, there are more than 3 million Filipino Americans.

What comprises the FilAm community is more than half with American citizenship and the rest are either Filipino nationals and/or are dual citizens of the United States and the Philippines.

Besides California and Washington, Filipinos form the largest group of Asians in Alaska, Guam, Maine, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming. And they are the second largest group of Asians in Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Illinois, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Hawaii.

The US Congress has established two months in celebration of Filipino American culture in the United States, namely, the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May, and the Filipino American History Month in October, commemorating the first landing of Filipinos on October 18, 1587 in Morro Bay, California.
