The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) works with the State Board of Education (SBE) and the State Board for Vocational and Technological Education (SBVTE).
ADE empowered the SBE and the SBVTE by Arizona’s education code on its responsibility on over one million from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Department operates under the direct supervision of the state-elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, which serves approximately 1,431 schools in 237 locally-governed school districts, and 509 charter schools. They meet regularly to regulate the conduct of the public school system.
Arizona seriously supports the ”No Child Left Behind Act of 2001”, a United States federal law commonly known as NCLB. It aims to improve and compare Arizona schools with the performance of America's primary and secondary schools, including providing parents more flexibility in choosing which schools their children will attend, and set goals that will result in success for all students. The Arizona Department of Education employs a strong system of school improvement to encourage and support all students, regardless of condition or circumstance, to reach their full potential.

Strategic Goals For 2007-2011
Raising the bar to improve Arizona public schools’ academic performance, a stronger foundation, student safety, and responsive service, the Arizona Department of Education laid out the 4-year Strategic Plan for 2007-2011 with the following goals:
Goal One: Provide leadership by initiating and advancingimprovements to public education.
Goal Two: Offer support to public schools and providersfor exemplary performance.
Goal Three: Ensure maximum academic and financial accountability in public education.
Goal Four: Deliver high quality customer service.
Reversing The Negative Trends
- The Arizona Department of Education is committed to the endeavor of improving the reading proficiency of Arizona students by the 3rd grade. It is a key strategy to increase academic performance based on the slight increase of student performance from 1998-2003.
- Although not a major problem, the Department has placed special emphasis on increasing the percentage of high school completion rates and reduce the number of dropped outs.
Good News
- The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reported the proportion of Arizona 8th graders who scored at the highest two levels in Mathematics increased by 62% between 1992 and 2003. The 4th graders’ performance nearly doubled.
- More Arizona graduating seniors get high scores (defined as 600 or above) on Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) college entrance examinations, increasing by 19% since 2001.
- Per pupil spending in Arizona public education has declined by 9%.
- The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certifications to a number of Arizona teachers has tripled since 2000.
- Arizona’s average of 490 students per school made it the 11th largest state in the US in the average size of elementary schools (12% higher than the national average).
- Arizona’s public school students score higher than private school students on some key subjects like Calculus.
- Arizona schools are safe. No school in Arizona is identified as “persistently dangerous” under the new No Child Left Behind law.
- Arizona leads the nation in offering more options to parents through charter schools. Charter schools are independent public schools operated under a charter from the local board of school directors and organized as a public and non-profit corporation. When we compare Arizona schools, Arizona is number one in 2004 having the strongest law facilitating academic results. States with the most charter schools operating are: California (533), Arizona (509), Florida (301), and Ohio (255).
- Community colleges in Arizona are among the best in the nation.

The Arizona Professional Teaching Standards prepares the teacher on state and licensure requirements, and are compatible with the national standards for teaching.
