Carefree-Arizona is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, with a population of 2,927 at the 2000 census.

First conceived as a planned community in the mid-1940's by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, this town at the beginning of 1955, there were land purchases made and the first buildings went up in 1958.

Great emphasis was on leisure with names such as Easy Street, Tranquil Trail, and Ho and Hum Roads.

Carefree’s motto is "Home of cowboys and caviar, where the Old West meets the new."

The town is a small 8.5 square-mile community, 2600 feet elevated.

The racial makeup of the town was 98.39% White, the rest comprising of Black or African American, Native American, Asian, and other races. Almost 3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Approximately 23 miles from Phoenix, Carefree houses the Gardens at Carefree Town Center for strolling, viewing meadows and artwork, enjoying lunch, shopping, and unwinding in resorts.

Events include scheduled concerts in the Amphiteater.

Residents in Carefree moved there for the same reasons: the Sonoran Desert beauty, peace, wonderful mountain views, lovely climate, wildlife (quail, coyotes, javelinas, birds, lizards, deer), no traffic congestion, strict zoning regulations.
