When I came to the United States six years ago, I was faced with a belief that America is the Land of Milk and Honey. Full of opportunities, I knew I would be able to surpass what I had achieved in my home country, the Philippines, and nine years of work in Japan (Yep, I speak Nippongo).

I got a job and I’m content with what I’m receiving (I guess…). It is enough to pay for the mortgage, the cars, utilities, etc. .. Until family expenses start to escalate, and work demanded that I stay away from home 5 days a week.

To add to that, we have three teenage children (well, almost because the youngest is turning 13 next year as I write this) to support back in the Philippines, growing as their financial needs also continue to climb. My wife, as a mother, suffers silently as she always wanted to spend more time with the kids, and be able to declare a vacation for us to see them at any given time.

My wife and I just fool around dreaming of an escape for a great lobster lunch at any weekday (oh-la-la!). Or spend long vacations all over the US, in the Philippines, Japan (I miss Japan too!!), Australia (to visit a very good friend whom I haven’t seen since 1992).

But all these took a step back. Yes, we can pay the bills, but…

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years.

We are already in our 40s. Are we stuck? Is life just paying bills? (Sigh…)
