Black Canyon City-Arizona
Black Canyon City-Arizona played a historic part in laying the groundwork for Phoenix, Arizona’s capital. When an Indian fighter and miner during the Civil War, Jack Swilling, founded the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company in 1867, he cleared the ditches to pave the way for the founding of Phoenix. He established a ranch which he kept until his death and soon became what is today Black Canyon City.
Located in Central Arizona in Yavapai County, Black Canyon City is reachable via the Interstate-17, 30 miles north of Phoenix, between this capital and Prescott. It is a great refuge for winter tourists with several lakes close by that offer fishing and boating. Adjacent to the Black Canyon City-Arizona is the 71,100-acre Agua Fria National Monument that showcases at least 450 ancient ruins and prehistoric sites of the early inhabitants of the Southwest.
