Arivaca-Arizona
Arivaca-Arizona derived its name from the Indian word “small springs”. Located 11 miles from the border of Mexico and south of Tucson, Arivaca has some of US’ oldest mines. It is home to Arizona’s oldest adobe schoolhouse that still exists today. Arivaca is primarily a retirement and residential area, of which many commute to Tucson and Green Valley. There is also some retail trade and service sector employment. The economy is mainly subsidized by tourism and agriculture. In Arivaca you can also find nine cattle ranches, vegetable farms, livestock producers, apple and pear orchards, and three large apiaries.
Panoramic high deserts, the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, the Arivaca townsite, Heintzelman Mine, the Ghost Town of Ruby, Oro Blanco, the Tumacacori Mission, (javelina, deer, whitetail) hunting, (wide-mouth bass, bluegill, catfish) fishing, and camping attract visitors on a regular basis.
